About this Item
Trouble-shooter on the railroad's wildest mountain division, the little man with the soft voice spoke low and aimed high. In this thrilling tale of the Red Desert the man who never forgot a danger, never made a mistake, finds in a brilliant, ruthless outlaw - a formidable opponent. The title character was modeled on real-life Union Pacific Railroad detectives Timothy Keliher and Joe Lefors (although his name was apparently derived from another UPRR policeman, James L. "Whispering" Smith). The novel was made into a movie on eight separate occasions, four silent films in 1916, 1917, 1926, and 1927, with later versions in 1930, 1935, 1948 and 1952. In 1961, NBC aired twenty episodes of the television series Whispering Smith, starring Audie Murphy, a film star and World War II hero in the title role. Frank Hamilton Spearman (1859?1937) was an American author known for his books in the Western fiction genre and especially for his fiction and non-fiction works on the topic of railroads. Newell Convers Wyeth (1882 ? 1945), known as N. C. Wyeth, was an American artist and illustrator. He was the pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators. During his lifetime, Wyeth created more than 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books. He is the father of Andrew Wyeth and the grandfather of Jamie Wyeth, both well-known American painters. Hardcover has red cloth board, white lettering on spine and front cover, but no DJ. With only a b&w reproduction of the Wyeth frontis, it makes "illustrated by" a little presumptuous. 1p listing of other titles by author on reverse of pre-title, xi+421pp. Two prior owner's signatures on front end-pages, front and rear gutters torn. Interior has text tightly bound, cleanly handled and text unmarked. Copyright and published 1906. This copy printed 1908 according to title page. 1st edition text assumed, definitely not 1st edition illustrations, printing unknown. No ISBN nor LCCN. MSR = $1.50. Seller Inventory # 007678
