Book Description Minerva, Auckland, 1st.ed., 1965. (Viii) + 163 pp., 27 plates ; map e.p's. D.j., 22 x 14cm. FINE. During the early years of New Zealand's history, many whalers plied the seas around the islands in their quest for these mammoths of the sea. A number of reliable witnesses recorded their observations of the old bay whalers, including Bishop Selwyn, Dr. Shortland, Ernest Dieffenbach and Edward Jerningham Wakefield. The author's researches enables him to describe the advent of whaling in the South Pacific, the discovery of New Zealand waters by the sperm whalers, the shore stations of New Zealand, the rise and fall of the trade, whaling across the South Seas, and places in the islands named by the whalers. 27 illustrations are taken from old pictures and prints. WHALING UNDER SAIL IN NEW ZEALAND'S WATERS, LATE 18TH / EARLY 19TH CENTURY. FINE COPY. Bookseller Inventory # C139B203

Book Description Minerva, Auckland, 1965. Hard Cover. Book Condition: VG++. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Art, Maps (illustrator). 1st. Whaling, and sealing, together with some extraction of timber, were virtually the initial New Zealand commercial activities when the first pre-colonials arrived. Whaling was well established in the Atlantic by ships operating from American bases and by the late 1700s both American and British whalers were working in Pacific and Australian waters. This trade flourished and "in its heyday was to extend from Tasmania to Peru, and from the waters south of New Zealand to Japan and Alaska. Hundreds of ships and thousands of men were to be employed and cargoes worth millions to be brought back." The author covers the establishment of this internatiional commerce before concentrating on NZ waters from the time these were found to host large numbers of sperm whales. The 11 chapters of his book cover all aspects of the rise and decline of whaling, including bay, shore and offshore whalers, the ups and downs of those conducting the business, the operational methodolgy of the industry on ship or shore and the markets they supplied to compile a wide-ranging study of the "trade." He observes that while whalers were "not addicted" to writing, their activities were observed (and recoprded) by "some of the acutest and most literate men in NZ in the early days." First edition from Minerva in 1965, 163 pages including bibliography and index. illustrated with 27 b/w images of contemporary art or photograps, drawings of right and sperm whales. endpaper maps of marking shore whaling stations on the North and South Islands. Black hard covers with gilt spine title are VG++, two ink names top corner FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Author has signed in ink on title page. Colour art DJ is VG+. A scarce book, with signed copies being rare. Size: 22cm By 14.5cm. By Author. Bookseller Inventory # 005143
