About this Item
Second edition. Three volumes. 8vo. Contemporary tan full calf by Nutt of Cambridge, recently rebacked in a close matching leather, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered red and green labels and with a gilt device to the other panels, endpapers and all edges marbled, inscribed by Kingsley to "Mr [James] Hunt, A Token of Gratitude from." on the half title of volume I. Some wear to the boards, else very good. James Hunt (1833-69) was a speech therapist who, like his father Thomas, was concerned with the study and treatment of stammering. In 1854 he published "Treatise on the Cure of Stammering" which, with revisions and under slightly different titles, was reissued another six times up to 1870. Hunt's clients included life-long stammerers such as Lewis Carroll and Charles Kingsley. Hunt and Kingsley clearly became quite close, with Hunt dedicating a later work - "A Manual of the Philosophy of Voice and Speech, Especially in Relation to the English Language and the Art of Public Speaking" (1859) to him. The British Library also holds an archive of fifty one letters from Kingsley to Hunt written between 1855 and 1869. Seller Inventory # 47534
