About this Item
Wall hanging, cotton cloth, 22 x 21 in, blue background with multi-colored circular images. The circular images are Japanese syllables. There are 64 different phonetic alphabet symbols (8 rows with 8 per row). Serizawa's seal (a hexagon) is stenciled at lower right. The seal is seldom found on this type of work. This pattern of circular symbols (on screens however) is found in two exhibition catalogues of Serizawa's work. In the 1979 catalogue of the La Jolla, Ca, exhibition you find similar symbols on a three pattern screen on exhibit item number 6 which is described as "Marumon Iroha, Circular Design Phonetic Alphabet." The exhibition screen had a total of 36 (12 x 3 panels) symbols. These symbols are also found in the 2001 National Museum of Scotland catalogue exhibition of Serizawa's work. Exhibition item number 70 is an eight leaf screen described as "Japanese Syllables, Stencildyed." On that panel there were a total of 94 syllables (12x7+10). ~ Condition. The hanging has been affixed (glued) to a mounting board and comes mounted in a custom burnished silver color frame with glass front. There is a break in the fabric along the top edge (ca 1/2 in). Otherwise the wall hanging is clean and free of faults. ~~ Bulky item and extra postage will apply. Shipment outside the US will probably be cost prohibitive. Seller Inventory # 1981070208
