Number 98 of 100 copies signed by Vincent Starrett who edited and also wrote the introduction. He also contributed one of his own stories to this anthology, and no doubt he wrote the notes about the authors preceding their stories too. Book includes The Adventure Of The Bruce-Partington Plans by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; A Battle Over The Tea Cups by August Derleth; and Dilemma At Shanghai by Starrrett. Other stories by leading authors of the era. Printed on wartime paper which has browned, as is inevitable for that kind of stock. Small closed tear at top of page with signed limitation. The tear extending vertically down about 3/4 of an inch but not close to the statement of limitation. Page of paper lying loose at back of the limitation page serves as a backing to prevent the tear from becoming worse. Archival tape mend might be good idea at some point to stabilize the tear. Book is priced downwards according to this fault. Signature of Starrett is below the limitation statement with number 98 in same medium dark blue pen as his signature. Another shorter vertical closed tear at top of title page. Some page numbers written in red pencil on first blank endpaper referring to "errata." Otherwise, the book is clean and square and tight. Spine with fading but lettering and desitgn still distinct. Illustration of man in long overcoat and hat on front cover with background in gilt somewhat faded. This is a scarce Starret item not only because of the limitation of 100 signed copies but because it was printed on a poor stock of paper and so surviving copies may be less than would ordinarily be expected for such a special issue.
