Authorized American editions of many of the titles, as well as the first English language translation of ANNA KARENINA and the first complete English language translation of WAR AND PEACE. Various pp. 12mo., navy blue cloth stamped in gilt, floral decorated endpapers, except for the CHILDOOD, BOYHOOD, YOUTH/WHAT TO DO volume which has plain endpapers. Light pale spotting to a few boards; minor shelfwear only. Cloth and gilt bright. Occasional pencil marks in margins of a few volumes. Bookplate of William Bradford Sprout in each volume. The publication of Tolstoy's works in English marked a turning point in the development of Thomas Y. Crowell and Company from its roots as a commercial trade bindery and reprint house to a publisher of new content as it introduced many of Tolstoy's works to the English-reading public. In 1885, after reading about the success of a French translation of MY RELIGION, Thomas Crowell acquired copies of the French translation and had it quickly translated into English by Huntington Smith, of the periodical Literary World, and published it to critical and popular acclaim. Emboldened by this success, Crowell made arrangements to have ANNA KARENINA translated from the Russian by Nathan Haskell Doyle, music critic of the Philadelphia Press, and published it in 1886. The critical enthusiasm with which it was received inspired Crowell to proceed with a complete translation from the Russian of WAR AND PEACE (it was preceded by Clara Bell's incomplete version translated from the French in 1886) and other books by Tolstoy and other Russian authors. Although Crowell's Tolstoy titles were not issued as a set per se, because the various titles were offered individually as they were translated, they were uniformly bound and, eventually, the list of titles was av.
