8vo. 6.25 x 8.75 inches. x + 276 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper which has small edge chips, including head and tail of spine and some foxing and browning. Slight stains on boards and light foxing of fly leaves but otherwise a very good copy with clean interior. Illustrated by 8 colour and 24 pages of black and white plates and by 53 text figures and maps. A fine survey of the geology, archaeology, natural history and economic, social and settlement history of the Weald, constituting an important early volume in the New Naturalist series. Sidney William Wooldridge (1900-63), geomorphologist and geographer, was a founder member of the Institute of British Geographers in 1935 and served as Professor of Geography at King's College, London, 1947-63. Frederick Goldring (b.1897) hosted field courses at his house in the Weald and took the photographs for this volume. Second reprint of the first edition of 1953.
