Surprisingly scarce late 19th century American printing. Nicely bound in leather and with marbled paper over the boards. Top edge gilt. Originally issued in a set, but this stands alone as one of the best known Sir Walter Scott historical novels. Notes by David Laing LL.D. who was a friend of Scott's. Preface by the publisher A.C. Black identifies this as the 1892 edition of that publisher. A.L. Burt may have purchased the rights to publish in the United States, but it seems a mystery why so few copies by Burt show up. Several illustration plates including frontispiece which is tissue protected. Another illustration on title page, which is undated. No copyright information. This copy nicely bound by its original owner in honey colored leather with blue and cream colored marbled paper over the boards as well. Marbled endpapers. Gilt lettering and embellishments on spine still bold. One aging spot, or some other kind of spot, on spine is darker colored than the leather but matches the dark brown morocco compartment of the spine for the title. Rub to the leather at the corners and along joints, and there is a short split of the front joint at head of spine, not however affecting solidity of the binding. Hinges are firm. Wear spot on front marbled endpaper. Square and tight, and the binding and contents are clean and bright. Size: Octavo, 564pp Incl. Index. Bookseller Inventory # 2818
