Description:

A Very Good copy of Rudolf Virchow's Lectures on pathology First Volume, Fourth Edition. Cellular pathology in full magnitude and physiology and pathological histology, Fourth, Newly Edited and greatly enlarged, SIGNED BY GEORG PUPPE on the second title page and there dated by him "1888", the year he graduated from Medical School, and stamped by him with his purple stamp indicating the book belongs to "Dr. Of Medicine, Georg Gottfried Puppe" (1867-1925). Considered the father of modern pathology and one of the founders of social medicine, Rudolf Virchow was a doctor, anthropologist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist, writer, editor, and politician who considered physicians to be the natural attorneys of the poor and who is known for his advancement of public health. Puppe was the Extraordinary Professor of Forensic Medicine in Leipzig and he was a pioneer of Social and Forensic Medicine, a medical doctor, researcher, and author of several medical classics. He determined what came to be known as "Puppe’s Rule" which provides that later-formed fractures cannot cross earlier-formed fractures, a rule which to this day is used in Forensic Pathology to determine the sequence of the impacts of a blunt object on the human skull. Although it does not carry his bookplate, this book belonged to Murray Gell-Mann, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions" and coined the name "Quark" for certain elementary particles, naming them after a line in James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake". Having been owned first by Puppe, and thereafter by Gell-Mann, this copy joins these major figures together with Virchow, the book's author. The book is in Very Good condition with scuffing to the boards, some rubbing through at the board edges, and wear to the board corners, spine cracked along the surface, but holding quite well, and evidence of the removal of a prior bookplate to the front pastedown. A wonderful copy of a notable book associating three great men of science and medicine and SIGNED BY GEORG PUPPE. QUITE SCARCE INDEED. Bookseller Inventory #
