It is also the only one online of this title, that is signed and dated by Avedon. This book is accompanied with a letter of provenance by the previous owner. The letter explains how and where the signatures were collected. From the letter: ¿.I acquired this collectible Random House first edition in 1998from the Micawber Bookstore in Princeton, NJ, where I lived for 25 years until recently relocating to central Indiana. It was signed in my presence by the author, acclaimed photographer, Richard Avedon, in 1999at a gallery showing at NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Arts. The two signatures within (actually there are three ; seller) were obtained at pre_performance press conferences by Sir Elton prior to his concert with Billy Joel in Tampa, Florida, 2002, and at the Indianapolis Conseco Fieldhouse, 2003. Jon Bon Jovi signed the book once at a press conference to announce his purchase of the AFL team, the Philly Soul, in Philadelphia, and in 2003, at a charity performance held in Red Bank, NJ. Signatures of Courtney Love, Patricia Aquette, and Jerry Hall were each acquired by a long time associate, prominent politician and fund raiser- and Democratic speaker of the assembly ¿ Alan Karcher, at a fundraising event in Manhattan. Mr. Karcher, formerly of Princeton and Sayreville, NJ, introduced me to Jon Bon Jovi in the late 80's. Alan Karcher was a long time family friend and neighbor of Bon Jovi's parentsJohn and Carol Bongiovi, also from Sayreville, NJ. I have worked as a publicist, journalist and editor for 30 years and have collected signed and autographed firsts.¿ . The letter of provenance is signed and dated 14 October, 2003. Condition is near fine; There are faded dents on top of three pages in the middle of the book. Bookseller Inventory # 000053
Synopsis: This book is almost completely full-bleed photographs taken by Richard Avedon of the Versace collections. The book is divided into 8 sections, by themes: Rembrance of Flings Past; Lust & Found; That Obscure Object of Desire; Gathering Moss; Rocks and Other Hard Places; The Way of All Mesh; Look Homeward Angel; and A Quick Stitch in Time. The sequencing of the photographs makes for an amusing, sexy presentation.
Review: When Gianni Versace was shot dead outside his Miami villa on July 15, 1997, few believed that his fashion empire would survive. The chutzpah and flamboyance of Versace the fashion house seemed inseparable from Versace the man. And yet, a year later, Versace remained buoyant, its reputation and market position if anything enhanced by its creator's tragic fate.
This book goes some way toward explaining why. From his first 1980 collection, Versace cannily engaged a great photographer, Richard Avedon, who stylishly wedded his designs to a potent blend of celebrity, beauty, flesh, sex, and humor, which became instantly identifiable as Versace--poised, pansexual, tongue firmly in sculptured cheek. Whether in trademarked group shots of intricately entangled supermodels, Stallone nude and stone-faced, Elton gleeful in drag, or Bon Jovi proudly strutting his buff bod, Avedon equals Versace--to the extent that he can show Kate Moss, without a stitch of Versace (or anything else), and we know that she is thinking Versace. This gorgeous volume collects more than 170 photographs, and gives us, as it justly proclaims: "A glimpse of the impassioned shameful opulent titillating sewmanship of that daredevil magician of art and artifice who was and will always be Gianni Versace." --Alan Stewart
