~Original full dark brown polished calf. Low raised bands, gilt decor, and red gilt label to spine. Splitting starting to spine over top (c. 3cm) and bottom (c. 1cm) hinges; hinges slightly tender but holding. Small loss to top spine. Mild wear to board edges, board corners slightly pushed in. All edges speckled red, much darkened. 8vo (10 x 16cm). Endpapers splitting at gutters. Pen and pencil annotations to rear endpapers; pen inscription to front free endpaper in calligraphic hand: 'Rich. Walker's Book. Bought at Leeds 1779'. The volume presumably remained in the Walker family, as t.p. has stamp 'Rev. J. Walker', and t.p. verso and rear blank endpaper have inscription 'J. Walker, Kirkby Malham' (North Yorkshire). A few pencil annotations to text. T.p. printed in black & red. Decorated initials and tailpieces. Hugo Grotius' much-reprinted treatise giving his arguments for the superiority of Christianity - in all its forms - to other world religions, first published in 1627 and adapted from Dutch verses written during Grotius' imprisonment (convicted of treason after the fall of the Oldenbarnevelt regime, whose pragmatic advocation of relative religious tolerance was shared and shaped by Grotius, he escaped thanks to the ingenuity of his wife Maria van Reigersberch, who arranged for his escape from prison in a book chest).
