About this Item

Title in gilt over a lovely green morocco compartment on the spine, which is also gilt embellished. Dark yellow and brown marbled paper over the boards. The marbling a lovely tree-like design. Wear at corners and some rub in other spots. Binding tight. Some brown age staining and a waterstain affecting first part of book. Small tear at head of back joint but the joints are still solid. Old inked stamp on title page of "Pierson Cure De Lorquin" with Maltese cross in center. Printer's device an unusual one of an angel wearing the Papal crown. In 1833 Geramb left France for Rome where he held the office of procurator-general of La Trappe . He soon gained the esteem and affection of Gregory XVI, and although Geramb was not a priest, Gregory named him titular abbot with the insignia of the ring and pectoral cross, a privilege without any precedent. Abbot de Geramb was the author of many works, the principal of which are: "Letters to Eugene on the Eucharist"; " Eternity is approaching"; "Pilgrimage to Jerusalem"; "A Journey from La Trappe to Rome. " His style is easy and without affectation. The customs, manners, and incidents of the journey are all vividly described, and the topographical descriptions are extremely accurate.
