Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Phptos, Art, Diagrams Maps, Tables (illustrator). Reprint. This massive volume recording the WW II history of the US Navy's submarines is naturally dominated by operations in the Pacific/South East Asian areas. It is, therefore, set in terms of American-Japanese encounters spread over that vast area. Thus the history, while absolutely comprehensive in its detail, draws together all aspects of the USN sumarine campaigns which not only cost the Japanese Navy crippling losses of warships, while virtually isolating the homeland from vital materials and resources by destroying the bulk of its mercantile fleet. It was USN submarines that first took the war to Japan's shores in the grim days after the Pearl Harbour attack. The price to the the US in terms of submarines lost was also high and the force was troubled by torpedo deficiencies for many months. The big battles involving surface units led to eventual US dominance, with its carrier aircraft also prominant in turnng the tide, and these are well known, the contribition of its subs to a lesser degree. All the actions, technical developments and stratigic policies are well recorded and Roscoe's review of the immense contribution of the USN's submarine service ensures that its role in acheiving Victory in the Pacific is not overlooked. His history recalls the courage, tragedies, sacrifices and endurance of the US submariners, along with the trials and the tribulations they faced. This impressive volume is a literary monument to them. The history was first published in 1949 with this copy from the 14th printing in 1988. 577 pages including 10 addenda items which include US subrarines losses, special missions, Japanese naval and merchant ship losses, top scoring US subs, plus index. Book is extensively illustrated throughout with numerous full page artistic images recreating actual incidents, also full page photos, many smaller photos, each chapter has an individual introductory drawing as do the narrative's five parts, few techical drawings, many maps and tables all b/w, with colour tone charts locating Japanese merchant ship losses in pocket on back pastedown. Grey hard covers have small nautical decoration to front, with silver spine titles on a black panel, boards and spine are VG with a few unobtrusive spots to both boards, front boad trifle loose but firmly attached, both end papers are light grey. This copy had been donated to a NZ Returned Services Club library and its stamp and the doner's ink name are on the half-title, otherwise the text block is in excellent conditrion, no other inscriptions, Owing to its weight (just over 1.8kg unpacked) this item will attract additional postage, particularly for international delivery.
