About this Item
Uncle Tom's Cabin was first published in book form in Boston in March 1852. It became immensely popular and with no copyright protection was republished in the UK by at least 19 publishers in at least 55 editions during the rest of 1852 (using evidence from the Publishers' Circle and the BL). The first UK publication was probably by Clarke and Co. in the second half of April. This edition by Partridge and Oakey was first published in weekly parts in the True Briton from 1 July to 26 December 1852 and in book form in the second half of September. The Cassell edition in weekly parts was not published until October. This Partridge & Oakey edition was probably published in the first half of November.4¾ x 7½" pp. xii + 275 with 12 illustrations on wood by Henry Anelay. Godd in blind stamped dark green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Boards are worn and bumped. Some faint browning to text, but no major stains or foxing. No dustwrapper.
