Al Souza, Uncle Don & Sandy / Doug & Chip, 1975/1976. 92 x 139mm. Postcard printed blue on off-white stock to recto and verso, with additional US air mail stamp, black and red rubber-stamps, handwriting in black ink and newspaper cartoon cutting stuck to recto. Signed (with initials) and dated by Souza in black ink to recto.On the blue-printed verso, Souza has addressed a postcard to the avant-garde architecture and design group Ant Farm; a series of reprinted rubber-stamps show that this was not deliverable as addressed and returned to sender by the US Postal Service in late January 1976. Doug & Chip , the title on the recto of the postcard, refers to the co-founders of Ant Farm, Doug Michels and Chip Lord, and the newspaper cartoon cutting depicts, quite fittingly, two ants. On the recto, handwriting in black ink shows that the postcard in its current form was addressed to Peter van Beveren at the Art Information Centre (according to postage stamps, on 1 June 1976).Condition: No tears or creases, slight toning to collage newspaper element and occasional glue mark to verso.
