About this Item
24mo (12.5 x 8 cms). [2], 3-544, [2], 3-459, [5], [76]. Bound in limp vellum, lettering in ink on the spine. The two books are separately paginated and with separate title pages, both dated 1588; the first book contains sermons 1-46, the second book ("Pars Altera") sermons 47- 86. There follow five unpaginated pages: three pages of errata covering both books, the printer's imprint (Excudebat. Stephanus Arguilly. Lugdunensis typographus. 1588), and a blank page. This is followed by 76 more unpaginated pages, with a new sequence of signatures, comprising: Index locorum sacrae scripturae (11 pages); Index rerum tam ad doctrinam quam ad mores spectantium (58 pages); and Speculum Monachorum (Mirror of monks ? apparently by Arnulfus de Boeriis and mis-attributed to St Bernard) (6 pages); and a blank page. In the first book pages 73, 80, 308, 351, 352, 494 and 509 are misnumbered respectively 79, 70, 307, 355, 353, 485 and 309; and in the second book pages 150, 215, 265, 398 and 399 are misnumbered respectively 116, 147, 295, 399 and 398. CONDITION. The binding in a poor condition: long tears on both sides of the spine; smaller tears and chips elsewhere; and almost completely detached from the text block. The text block is for the most part in much better condition. There is some waterstaining. There is some foxing (occasionally severe) and many areas of tanning. The last five leaves are almost entirely and deeply tanned and feel fragile; one is almost detached; the text is still legible however. Some leaves have peripheral chips or other damage, but I have found only one instance where the marginal text is affected, and that slightly. Several pages are creased at one or other corner; some along the fore-edge. Blank pages at the beginning and end of the volume are absent or disintegrating. The volume is free of manuscript or other markings, apart from a modern owner's signature in ink on the title page of the first book. Seller Inventory # 000397
