Remarkably, I couldn't find anything for sale, or otherwise, on the Internet containing the signature of the psychoanalyst Harry Stack Sullivan. No letters, no books, nothing. So these are certainly very rare items. The books themselves are fairly irrelevant. One is titled Falk, written by Joseph Conrad. It contains three stories: Falk; Amy Forster; and To-Morrow. The book has flexible covers. It was published in 1920. It's not a first edition. There is a 2 inch tear at the juncture between the front cover and the spine beginning at the top edge. Same at the juncture with the rear cover, but only 1/2 an inch. There is a moderate forward lean to the spine. The binding of the book is quite solid. The aforementioned tears haven't affected the solidity of the front cover at all. The juncture between the front inside cover and front end paper is quite solid. Both covers are tightly bound. The rear cover has a thin tear off its bottom edge of about 2 inches, but it's not on the juncture. There is a crack at the juncture between the verso of the half-title page (which is where Sullivan's signature is) and the facing title page, but both pages are tightly bound from top to bottom. The rest of the pages, the text pages, are mostly quite tightly bound. There is one instance of a thin space at the juncture between two facing pages, both of these pages are tightly bound from top to bottom. The pages are quite clean with this exception: there is a light water stain at the bottom corner of pages 220 to 268. It doesn't come anywhere near the print. Scrolling through the pages, I'm not finding any other soiling. There isn't any conspicuous creasing. No placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. There is one small attachment a 2.5" x 1" label off the top edge of the front end paper (Robert Sheehan, Scarsdale, New York, I think he was born around 1880). That's the only attachment. Below Dr. Sullivan's signature (see photo) there is a date and then the letters S. E. P. H. That's the case in the other book as well. I have no idea what that refers to. If somebody out there does I would very much appreciate your letting me know. Also below that there's a few words that I'm having difficulty deciphering the first one is 'In'. Somebody good at deciphering could probably figure it out. The last two words are Chesapeake Bay. The northern part of Chesapeake Bay is in Maryland where Sullivan lived. The writing on this page represents the only writing found anywhere in the book. The second book is None But The Brave by Arthur Schnitzler. It's a hardcover, published in 1926. It appears to be an American First Edition (SD). Some the black color on the covers has been lost. The lettering on the spine is legible but doesn't jump out at you. The cover edges and corners are in quite good shape, no conspicuous rubbing. There is a small tear in the cloth on the front side of the spine, also two tiny spots of rub-through at the bottom edge of the spine. The book is square and the spine is straight. Both covers are very solidly bound, no issues at the junctures with their facing end papers. There is a space at the juncture between the blank verso of the signed front end paper and its facing half-title page. Again, both pages are tightly bound from top to bottom. I didn't see any other spaces at the junctures between any of the other facing pages. The pages are in pretty nice shape, but there is a little crease at the top corner of all of them, not dear the print. That's the result of a bump/crease below the top corner of both covers. There are few tan spots off the top edge of the pages 11 through 15. None reaching the print. I didn't see any other soiling. There are no markings in this book. No attachments of any kind. And Dr. Sullivan's dated signature with the S.E.P.H. below it is the only writing in the book. Dr. Sullivan had a remarkable career.
