One of a lovely series of classic books for young readers illustrated by famous artists of the day, each with a colorful paper pastedown to the front board. These have recently been reissued, making these original editions more highly collectible, particularly when they contain color plates, like this one, which has a full-color, full-page frontispiece, along with 3 internal color plates & decorative endpapers by famous US war artist, W. J. Aylward (1855-1956). Orig. published in this format in 1925, this is a 1960 edition, in 403 pages. Hardcover book has orange cloth-covered boards with front paper pastedown & gilt lettering to spine. Condition is VG: extremely clean inside, pages creamy white with very light tanning to edges: all plates are pristine & unmarked. Binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Moderate shelfwear externally, including many rubbed spots to orange cloth. Front pastedown has a teeny amount of edgewear, but colors bright, some scratches through title.
