Third edition, corrected. xxiv+302 pp. 21 x 13 cm. First published in 1755, and again in 1764. The four sections are: The theory of walls, arches and timbers; The knowledge of the Materials, their properties, qualities and the manner of using them; The manner of tracing a Fortress on the ground; The method of building Aquatics as Stone Bridges, Harbours, Quays, Wharfs, Sluices and Acqueducts. Illustrated with twenty-eight copper plates. "For the use of the Royal Academy of Artillery in Woolwich." Bound in full calf with a six-panelled spine with raised bands, gilt lining, and a modern black-and-gilt spine label. New endpapers, owner's signature on the title page, all plates folded and present, though some have a worn edge. A tight copy with some wear from use. There is an old ink inscription on the title page, "From Major Wilson to Lieut. Dubardieu", underneath which it has, "Captain Francis Dubardieu R.H.E." Francis Dubardieu's father, the Rev. John Dubardieu, was Rector of Annahilt, Co. Down, and the author of "A Statistical Survey of Co. Down" (1802) and "A Statistical Survey of Co Antrim (1812). His fourth son, Capt. Robert Rawdon Hastings Dubardieu, c.1784-1861, was serving as a Lieutenant (1823) and later, Captain (1836) in the Royal Hanoverian Engineers in Germany. On return to Ireland he was employed by the Newry Navigation Company. He later became County Surveyor for Sligo (1834-36) and Louth (1836-40). In Hanover he published a booklet "Vorschlage zur Verbesserung des Bruckenbauwesens im Konigreich Hannover und anderen Theilen Norddeutschlands". Stade 1823. (Propositions for the improvement of bridges in the Kingdom of Hanover and other parts of northern Germany.) In 1830 he published a translation of a German military treatise "Instructions for the choice, fortifying, occupation, defence and attack of military positions", London 1830. Ref. Dictionary of Irish Architects. This is a very interesting association copy. Scarce. Seller Inventory # 16039
