About this Item
3 vols.: xiv, 421; vi, 432; vii, 436, 9 p. 20 cm. Fold-out table at rear of vol. III. Half leather with marbled boards. Matching endpapers and text block edges. Spine labels missing, general wear to extremities, especially corners. Bookseller's and former owner's labels on front pages. Fold-out map missing but replaced by photocopy. First published in 1829, Hall's Travels caused some offence to Americans due to his criticisms of American society. Specifically, Hall witnesses a slave auction and is greatly disturbed by the experience (pp. 34-40). He is not entirely pro-abolitionist, however, and his generally positive descriptions of southern plantations may strike modern readers as naive. Appendix at rear of Vol. III explains how to operate a camera lucida, an optical device used as a drawing aid by artists. Rear table shows square mileage of each state of the union.
