About this Item
21 x 13.5 cm. Octavo. [24] xvi 543 [1]pp. Bound into 3/4 brown conetmporary leather with marble boards and endpapers. Spine has been professionally rebacked, perserving much of the original. Illustrated two large fold-out color maps as well as 5 monochrome copper plates (complete). Both maps have a tiny closed tear near one of the folds but are otherwise and fantastic condition. The final page, "directions for placing the maps and plates" does not mention the 5th plate "The Tabacco Plant" but it is present opposite page 522. Mild foxing to title page and a few other scattered pages. This is the second edition, which is quite similar to the first. An important and scarse early work on middle west exploration. Carver's account traces his travels further into the interior of America than any other pre-Revolutionary account. Includes some of the earliest pioneer descriptions of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Includes the first mention of the "Oregon".The author describes his encounters with local Native Americans. References: Evans B7338 (supplement). Howes C215. Sabin 11184. Streeter III, 1772.
