About this title
Whether you're trekking off to Vermont for the weekend or flying to Japan on a business trip, The Traveler's Reading Guide is the ideal reference for those who want to experience the full flavor of their destination. Conveniently organized by region (Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific and Oceania, Europe, Latin America and North America), the completely revised and updated edition of The Traveler's Reading Guide offers thousands of new and useful reading suggestions for the would-be traveler. Each section provides lists under the following subject headings: series guidebooks, background readings, guidebooks, history, and novels. Bibliographic citations contain author, title, publisher, year of publication, concise description of content, relevant excerpts from reviews, and suggestions for further reading by the same author. The book also features several valuable appendixes, including a reading list about travel literature, collections of travel writings, a list of authors of novels with English settings and a complete index of authors. A boon to the traveler and a must for libraries, The Traveler's Reading Guide is certain to make any trip more enjoyable...even if one is traveling only by armchair. From Library Journal:
This work fills the need for a reference book that recommends background reading on tourist destinations. Although guidebooks and other nonfiction works are easy to identify, novels that convey locales are more elusive. Simony has cast a broad net, arranged her choices geographically, and provided annotations for each title, primarily with quips from such reviewing sources as LJ. She generally excludes outdoor books, mysteries, and "serious and/or classic novels." Most of the titles cited are in print, with publishers and dates--but not prices--included. There are several appendixes and an index of authors cited. A welcome addition to larger travel collections, and a useful selection tool as well.
