; 94 pp.; DJ; F/F; The original material in this book came from a series of letters in the Omaha Herald, written by Dr. Latham, the resident Union Pacific Railroad doctor at Laramie. UP press agents quickly saw the advertising value of the letters and in 1871 reprinted them in pamphlet form. The UP subsequently gave away thousands of copies to encourage moneyed easterners to settle along its lines and to invest in western ranching. Their business aim was of course to increase population and thereby their freight and passenger business. Trans-Missouri Stock Raising is the first of the great books about the range cattle industry. _____ One of 999 copies. Introduction by Jeff Dykes, designed by Carl Hertzog. This edition has been greatly improved by the addition of much material about early cattle books, plus some biographical material about Dr. Latham. Marginal editorial annotations printed in red type either correct mistakes or clarify some obscure stateme in the original. . D&D=71 Reese.120=#68 Lowman=146. [kwA_ ]. Bookseller Inventory # 15725
