Later Brown Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. 1833. Second edition in two volumes. Title-page, xxx, 1 page of errata, 696pp. and 4 folding plates; title-page, xxxv, 1 page of errata, 782pp. and 3 folding plates. Siméon Denis Poisson (1781-1840) was a French mathematician and physicist who worked on statistics, complex analysis, partial differential equations, the calculus of variations, analytical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, elasticity, and fluid mechanics. His Traité de Mécanique was first published in France in 1811, and the two volumes for sale are the second French edition. The first English translation of his Treatise on Mechanics did not appear until 1842. The two volumes are uniformly bound in later (probably late 20th or early 21st C.) brown buckram covered boards with gold titling on the spines. The cases of the books are in excellent condition. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and a more noticeable ink stain on pages 637 to 642 in volume 1. There is some foxing to the title-pages and first dozen or so pages in both volumes and some scattered but mostly light foxing elsewhere with the books, mostly in volume 1. The folding plates at the end of both volumes also show some foxing. A name and date (1867) has been written on the top edge of both title-pages.
