FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Contemp. half lea. with marbled boards. xii, 564 pp. Spine faded and a bit edge worn; otherwise, a very good copy. Scipion Pinel (1795-1859), the son of Philippe, the renowned psychiatrist who transformed the prison for the insane into a hospital, was also "a prominent psychiatrist in his own right" (Zilboorg & Henry, pp. 328 and 534-535). In the present treatise, Pinel describes the treatment of disorders affecting intelligence, the instincts and personal abilities, voluntary motion, and the senses and sensation. In particular, he considers acute inflammation, edema, the infiltration of the brain with fluids, and the distinction between general paralysis and ordinary paralysis. Not in Wellcome or Waller.
