Tosaka Jun (1900–1945) was one of modern Japan’s most unique and important critics of capitalism, the emperor system, imperialism, and everyday life in wartime Japan. This collection of translations contains some of Tosaka’s most important essays and original articles on Tosaka.

About the Author:

Ken C. Kawashima is Associate Professor, Department of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto. He is the author of The Proletarian Gamble: Korean Workers in Interwar Japan (Duke University Press, 2009), and the English translator of Uno Kozo s Theory of Crisis (forthcoming, Brill and Haymarket presses). Currently, he is researching the history of recorded sound and music. Fabian Schaefer is Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He is the author of Public Opinion, Propaganda, Ideology: Theories on the Press and its Social Function in Interwar Japan, 1918-1937 (Brill, 2012) and editor of Tosaka Jun: Ideology, Media, Everydayness (in German; Leipziger Universitaetsverlag, 2011). Robert Stolz is Assistant Professor of Modern Japanese History, University of Virginia. He is the author of Bad Water: Nature, Pollution, and Politics in Japan 1870-1950 (Forthcoming, Duke University Press). His current research is on the relationship between ecology, capitalism, and politics. He has published in Japan Forum and The Asia-Pacific Journal.
