FIRST EDITION, pp. 188, [2], crown 8vo, original black cloth, lettered in white to upper board and backstrip, slight lean to spine, edges and endpapers faintly spotted, pencilled ownership inscription to rear free endpaper, Arthur Wragg dustjacket, a little darkened at folds, shallow chipping and a little rubbing at extremities, very good. One of a series of books on the topic issued by the publisher between the wars, here giving a voice to those directly affected - supplemented by commentary from leading figures of the time. The eleven accounts were initially broadcast on the radio. The work of Arthur Wragg (born in Eccles, raised and educated in Yorkshire, before basing himself in London) was frequently informed by his concern for social justice in the aftermath of the Great War and in the midst of the Great Depression; he was instrumental in the work of the Peace Pledge Union, alongside his friend Cannon Sheppard - producing pieces of propaganda that conveyed their cause in stark imagery. Here his design, printed in black and brown against a beige background, the couple and child clearly burdened but looking upwards (and also with the detail of a lamp interrupting the near-total blackout of the backstrip panel), conveys the combination of despair and hope that underlie most of his work.
