Second impression. Lacking the folding map. Xvi, 420 pages + frontis + 7 plates + 73 b&w in-text illustrations. Original green cloth covers with black lettering on spine and front board. Illustration in black of a yak and two men ascending a path on the front cover. Dimensions: 8 1/8 by 6 1/8 inches. Prize label on front endpaper. 1/4" chips to cloth at head and tail of spine. 1" horizontal tear along cloth at base of spine. 1/4" chip to cloth at tail corner of front board. No inscriptions. Some offsetting to endpapers. Minor rubbing to edges of spine and boards. "I had long entertained the desire to travel in some unknown country, and in the spring of 1896, when circumstances were favourable, the wish was transformed into a settled purpose. The vast extent of the territory marked ' unexplored' on the map of Tibet, then recently published, at once attracted me, and it was to this inhospitable and almost inaccessible land that I resolved to proceed.
