About this title

From Preface: "Eleven years ago Oslo Art Association organized a major exhibition of Theodor Kittelsen's paintings, drawings and water-colours. It proved a great success, and gave a new sense of actuality to his popular art. The catalogue produced for the occasion contained the first complete registered list of all known work by Kittelsen, amounting in all to over 1200 items. Naturally this figure does not include every single work. In view of the great efforts this exhibition and the accompanying catalogue involved, the Committee mooted the idea of a publication with the emphasis on a comprehensive, carefully chosen and finely reproduced selection of his pictures, and comprising that portion of Kittelsen's life-work that undoubtedly constitutes his chief claim to fame, viz. his drawings and water-colours. Above all this publication would aim to provide as faithful an impression of Kittelsen's water-colours as the reproduction technique of the present day is capable of giving. To a large extent, moreover, this has now - 70-80 years after Kittelsen's best work in colour was created - become something of a rescue operation. Even in 1964, at the time of the exhibition, it was obvious that many of the watercolours had suffered from the ravages of time. The reproductions in colour of these pictures at this juncture - in the nick of time, as far as some of them are concerned - will, it is hoped, enhance the value of the book, and give it lasting value, apart from the delight that every fresh encounter with Kittelsen's art inevitable creates for the moment...."
