The Loddiges collection was one of the most important nurseries of 19th century England. It was established by the German immigrant Joachim Loddiges (1738-1826) and rose to full prominence under Georg Loddiges (1786-1846), who entered the major scientific circles of his day (Linnean Society, Horticultural Society, Microscopical Society) and was also the commissioner of the present plates.
