Two large silver tone photographs of India's first steel plant. Founded in 1907 by Jamsetji Tata, and producing steel by 1912, the company became the largest steel plant in the British Empire. It was set up in only 3 years, with construction plans drawn up by American and Belgian engineers. The plant rapidly produced steel critical for use in W.W.I: 1,500 miles of rail and 300,000 tons of steel material for military campaigns in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Salonica and East Africa. Both images are company pictures; the first depicts most of the work force standing on risers in front of the plant's massive chimneys, with Indian workers standing, and 5 British directors in white pith helmets seated in the foreground. A small bill board erected in the group reads, "Blooming & [Railings?] Bar Mill. The second is a larger company image, showing more personnel, with the British managers standing in the center foreground, and a few workers standing rather precariously on a hoist overlooking the crowd in the background. 11 1/2 x 9"; 11 1/4 x 9 1/4".
