Top and fore edge foxed, but otherwise a very good copy. Pictorial bookplate of Malcolm Muggeridge (1903-90), journalist and satirist, with red ink notes on last free endpaper. Illustrated by 16 pages of clack and white photographs. A collection of documents from the 1966 Moscow trial of the Soviet dissident writers, Sinyavsky and Daniel. Sections include background to the trial, the trial itself, the aftermath, with official comment and unpublished protests and five appendices, including reactions from abroad and a literary appreciation by Frank Kermode. Both Andei Sinyavsky (1925-97) and Yuli Daniel (1925-88) had published their works abroad under the the pseudonyms, Tertz and Arzhak respectively, and both were charged with the offence of anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda in the Supreme Court of the RSFSR and sentenced to terms of imprisonment in the Gulag camps. On release Sinyasky moved to France, where he became Professor of Russian Literature at the Sorbonne, while Daniel chose to remain in the Soviet Union. Edited by Leopold Labedz (1920-93), anti-communist Anglo-Polish commentator on the Soviet Union, and Max Hayward (1924-79), translator of Russian literature (joint translator of Doctor Zhivago), who served at the British embassy in Moscow and lectured at the University of Leeds, later moving to Oxford.
