About this Item
vii,v,[1],[59]-102,[1],93-215pp., plus four handcolored lithographed plates. Original printed wrappers, buckram spine strip. Mild wear and tanning to wrappers, spine ends starting to fray. Interior bright and clean. Very good. A rare copy of volume I, number III of the TRANSACTIONS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The volume is complete, but the pagination is irregular, owing to contents from numbers I and II which would have been added to this issue. As well, the Society was not consistent with volume designations in its first few decades. This item begins with tables of contents for the "Transactions" and "Proceedings" sections for all of volume I; the table of contents for number III is printed on the rear wrapper. This issue begins with first Society president H.A.S. Dearborn's "Historical Sketch of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society" (pp.[59]-92) and continues with brief sections on the Beurré d'Aremberg, Dearborn Seedling, and Heathcot pears, as well as the Red Astrachan apple (each with a very attractive handcolored plate) (pp.[93]-103). Then follows reports from the Society's business meetings and annual exhibitions, committee reports, member lists, and finally, the "Catalogue of Books in the Massachusetts Horticultural Society's Library" (93-215). An important issue from the the oldest horticultural institution in the United States. OCLC 7376471, 785628175. Seller Inventory # WRCAM41119
