Issued monthly in parts (missing Parts XIV-XVII). 48, [49]-96, [97]-138 + [6], [139]-184 + [2], [185] - 232, 233-304, *317-340, 341-388, 389-436, 437-484, [485]-520, 521-568, 569-616 pp. The first American novel published in monthly parts, and the only book issued by Ticknor and Fields thus. Precedes British book publication and Harper & Brothers' pirated bound edition (1860). See Pye: 100 Most Significant Books Published by Ticknor and Fields, No. 62. Part I has title page as cover, rear cover blank, Parts II -XIII have title page cover and rear cover ads, except Part VIII missing rear cover. Parts I-II have ads on verso of front covers, Parts III-XIII have "AUTHOR'S EDITION" on verso of front covers. Parts XI-XIII have small ads with manicules for bound edition, Tom Brown at Oxford, Part First, at bottom of front cover versos. All covers marked "Price 12 Cents." at top right and "To be published in Monthly Parts" at bottom. Some covers chipped, occasional light pencil or foxing. Scarce, very good condition overall. Pye notes in his bibliography the that "Interestingly part VII ends in mid sentence-just like the Harper and Brothers pirated edition of Volume 1" In our parts: *Text incomplete: Part VII begins with p. 317, mid-sentence, bound as such, missing pp. 305-316 (Part VI ends with Chapter XVIII mid-sentence, "The notice of any one else attending Tiny in her interesting situation seemed to excite Simon beyond bearing," Part VII begins on p. 317 with: sir, he said; and the policeman would be near to keep out the big boys, if you wanted him; shall I go and tell him to step round, sir?")
