About this Item
New York: John Day, 1956. Edition not stated. Lacking front blank flyleaf, otherwise Near Fine, in Near Fine dustwrapper. Translated from the French by Emma Craufurd. Author's preface about the book, her introduction which is a concise history of geisha, followed by three biographies of heroic geishas of a vanished world, as thrilling as any fiction but more so for being fact: Tale of a devoted mistress near the end of the Edo period who is to this day celebrated during the Festival of the Black Ships; tale of a loyal confident of the 1940s, who put her life on the line at the highest level of politics; and of a star performer known as "the armless beauty." Her name was Tsumakichi and one morning she awoke to discover her step-father was going through their home beheading everyone in the household with a samurai sword, and concluded by lopping off both her arms. She was only 17. But she went on to become nationally known as a painter and poet who held her painting or writing brushes in her teeth. "Three intimate life stories which illuminate the spirit of an honored tradition." In her Introduction the author says these truthful portraits should counter the false western views of geishas as being Madame Butterflies, but instead as women with artistic, political, and business acumen.
