About this Item
Original etching with aquatint. No. 45/100, signed by the artist. Image size: 57.5cm x 37.5cm. Sheet size: 75cm x 57cm. The etching process used by Bryan Poole: The etching process dates from the 16th century, and no photographic aids are used. The artist draws through a resin resist (which is impervious to acid) on to a copper plate with an etching needle. The plate is then immersed in ferric chloride acid so that it is etched along the needle lines. This etched linear drawing provides the foundation for all plates. The five other stages in the making of the plate involve aquatint, spit-bite aquatint, soft ground, oil of spike lavender and sugar lift, in varying degrees. Final highlights are then achieved by burnishing back into the surface of the plate exposing the linear structure of the image. The plates are then inked in four to seven colours and hand printed on to acid-free paper in an intaglio press. Hand colouring in water colour is completed once the prints are dry. Bryan Poole is a New Zealand-born Botanical and Natural History artist who has been working in the United Kingdom since the early 1980s for a variety of clients in this specialist area. These include The British Homeopathic Journal, The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), The Natural History Museum and the McMillan Press Publications for the Royal Horticultural Society. His formal training as a botanical artist stems from his association with The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, where he worked under Dr Christopher Grey-Wilson, former editor of The Kew Magazine (which incorporated Curtis Botanical Magazine in 1984), and author of numerous books on botanical and horticultural subjects, in particular the Illustrated Flora of Britain & Northern Europe. He is a member of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and is an RHS Gold Medal Winner. He has work in the Te Papa in Wellington, Otago University's Hocken Library, the Ralph Hotere Collection in Gore, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, and the Natural History Museum at Kew. 0.
