(2), xv, 462 pp. Thirty-one large and well-executed botanical woodcuts illustrate the materia medica section at the end of the book. Occasional light spotting and browning; a very good copy Alva Curtis (1797-1881), professor and president of the Botanico-medical College (Columbus, Ohio, 1839-41; Cincinnati after 1841) and a botanic practitioner from 1836 until his death, the leader of the "independent Thomsonians" split (1836-38) ". with Samuel Thomson over establishment of medical schools and infirmaries. His group, the Physio-Medicals, founded schools primarily in the Midwest and South. Following the split, Thomsonianism disintegrated, leaving several botanic sects, strongest of which were the Eclectics and Curtis's Physio-Medicals. Led this group for many years as editor of the leading journal and president of the leading school." (Dict. Amer. Med. Biog. I.170-71). The present work, written by Curtis over a number of years, encompasses the principles and teaching of his botanical school of medicine, perhaps more so than any of his other books, though it is not noted in the Dict.
