xxviii, pp 54 + facsimile. Presentation copy of the great book collector Carl Pforzheimer's edition of Surrey to the New York book dealer George Hellman. Laid in is a manuscript letter by Pforzheimer from April 30. 1934 on his Hidden Brook Farm headed paper (Purchase, NY) to 'My dear Mr Hellman' thanking him for his books 'and you must see the [William Cullen] Bryant [Washington] Irving Correspondence. I also have a presentation Copy of the Later poems from Bryant to Samuel Rogers' with further literary gossip about Irving. (Hellman published an edition of Washington Irving's correspondence.) Pforzheimer's 'Compliments' card is also laid in together with the envelope that contained the accompanying letter. The book which was edited for Pforzheimer by Herbert Hartman and privately printed by John Johnson at the Oxford University Press; this is No. 95/250 copies; burgundy buckram, slightly rubbed. Carl Pforzheimer (1879-1957) made a fortune on the New York Stock Exchange and spent much of his fortune on amassing a huge collection of rare books and manuscripts, much of which is held by the New York Public Library.
