The present translation of 164 short stories comprise part of a classic of popular Chinese literature, the Liozhai, that dates to the early Qing Dynasty. The original work, written by Pu Songling, consisted of approximately 500 anecdotes, often containing supernatural phenomena or actors and many of which subtly address social ills. Includes appendices on the history of the original work, and a brief explanations of some of the Chinese cultural practices encountered in the tales.
