A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in a Fine dust jacket (remaining rather bright and with less toning than we usually see), SIGNED BY GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ on the half-title and there inscribed by him as follows: "To Dan, again & again, / Gabriel [underscored] / 93; having the complete title of "The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor who drifted on a life raft for ten days without food or water, was proclaimed a national hero, kissed by beauty queens, made rich through publicity, and then spurned by the government and forgotten for all time", this is the first translation to English of Marquez's debut nonfiction book, a tale (written as a first-person narrative) of a young sailor named Luis Alejandro Velasco who nearly died when his ship sank on a voyage from the United States to Columbia. Multiple members of the crew died, but Velasco, who had been declared dead after a four-day search for survivors, drifted aboard a raft for ten days until the currents carried him to the Colombian coast. Gabriel Garcia Marquez won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his novels and short stories, in which the fantastic and the realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, reflecting a continent's life and conflicts", making him the first Colombian to win the Prize.
