About this Item
John Richard Jefferies (1848?1887) was a British novelist and essayist who helped pioneer the field of modern nature writing. Jefferies described the English countryside with an intimate vividness and expansive passion that inspired both his contemporaries and later writers. This is an extended essay of introspection in which Jefferies attempts to convey his life-work and motivations. The foundation of his narrative is his experience of nature, walking the hills and coastlines of nineteenth century rural England. Those experiences generated a powerful spiritual force in Jefferies, energizing his development of a unique view of man?s place in the universe. In this work, he describes those views in emotional terms, intimate and mystical at the same time. It is said that the American conservationist Rachel Carson had two copies of this book at her bedside. Originally published in London, 1883. This copy published by Brentano's of New York, undated, 158pp. Estimate of publication, 1890, a few years after Jefferies' death. Brentano's was founded as an independent bookstore in New York City in 1853 by August Brentano, who established a newsstand in front of the New York Hotel. On the eve of the Great Depression, the firm had expanded rapidly to become the largest bookstore chain in the nation with four stores in New York City, plus single stores in Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington along with operating international stores and publishing houses. The debt-load from this expansion caused the company to file for bankruptcy in 1933. Brentano's US stores operated until 1984 as part of Borders-Waldenbooks. Travel sized hardcover has green leatherette boards with gold lettering & designs on front and spine, but no DJ. Top page edge gilt. Interior is tight, clean, and unmarked. No copyright date. Further evidence this copy produced early 20th, late 19th century. Rare, no other copies from this publisher listed for sale at this date. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Seller Inventory # 007639
