The longest major poem by Coleridge, illistrated by Gustave Doré was written in 1797–98 and published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads. The poem may have been inspired by James Cook's second voyage of exploration (1772–1775) of the South Seas and the Pacific Ocean. The tale relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding-guest’s reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner’s story progresses. The poem is illustrated by magnificent engravings of noted French artist, Gustave Doré (1832-1883). Translated from English by Apollone Korinthsky. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 – 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria. His critical work, especially on Shakespeare, was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. Coleridge coined many familiar words and phrases, including suspension of disbelief. He was a major influence on Emerson and American transcendentalism. Gustav Doré (1832-1883) was an amazingly prolific artist of 19th century. Among his many works are illustrated editions of 'Paradise Lost', the Bible and 'The Idylls of the Kings'.
