About this Item
Blue cloth w/gilt lettering and wonderful black cover decoration. Rubbing to head and heel of slightly darkened spine, small tear at lower edge, mild scuffing to boards, tips of corners lightly rubbed, upper front corner bumped. Text is clean and bright, no marks, save ghosts of author inscription to both front pastedown and half title. Inscription reads: 'From the author in acknowledgment of a preferred opinion upon one of the most difficult and important questions of life- Silk or Velvet?'. "With a hero who promoted Prohibition but was in love with the daughter of a brewer, the heroine of the book despite the fact that she wears diamond earrings and a yachting cap adorned with anchors and embroidered in old gold floss silk." (from an early review of the book in the Honolulu Press) The New York Times saw a more political angle and remarked of the book: ".as Mr Edmund P. Dole would have it, or as it seems to be written within the lines, the Republicans are the only lawabiding people on God's earth, the only virtuous, self-respecting souls, and the Democrats quite the opposite. There is a tinge of fanaticism, then, in Mr. Dole's Romance.". Seller Inventory # B703HBB
