About this Item
1805 first edition Stockdale, printer (Dublin, Ireland), 5 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches tall full leather bound, [1], xi, [3], 400, 16 pp. Covers heavily rubbed and edgeworn, with chipping along spine and cracking to both outer hinges, though the binding is quite firm. Heavy soiling and foxing to prelims, through the title page and preface, with light to moderate foxing throughout. On the front pastedown, number stamp and engraved bookplate of Christopher Wilson Hollowell (1821-1892) of Pasquotank County, North Carolina. The front free-endpaper, which is soiled, torn and has a small hole, has a large prior owner's bookplate with bibliographic notes. Appears to be lacking the frontispiece portrait of Curran. A couple of pages with fore edge chipping. Otherwise, clean and unmarked. Despite its detractions, still an excellent reading/reference copy. ~SP04~ [2.0P] The speeches of John Philpot Curran (1750-1817), an Irish orator, politician, wit, lawyer and judge, who held the office of Master of the Rolls in Ireland, along with an 1805 speech 'on the Catholic question' by Irish politician and member of the Irish House of Commons Henry Grattan (1746-1820), who campaigned for legislative freedom for the Irish Parliament in the late 18th century. Curran's speeches include those delivered on the election of the mayor of Dublin, and cases involving libel, false imprisonment, and defense of several of the United Irishmen in prominent high treason cases in the 1790s (his clients included Revd. William Jackson, Archibald Hamilton Rowan, Wolfe Tone, Napper Tandy, The Sheares Brothers, Lord Edward Fitzgerald, William Orr and William Drennan). Seller Inventory # SP04-0691-10743
