Book Description John Teesdale,, Des Moines:, 1860. First Edition.. 8vo, pamphlet, original printed wrappers, 15 pp. Mild wear and soiling to wrappers; otherwise near fine. This scarce title explains Iowa Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood's refusal to extradite Barclay Coppic to Virginia to face prosecution for his role in in the raid on Harper's Ferry. Kirkwood claimed that Virginia Governor Letcher's request was defective, and refused to comply. While Virginia was able to execute Coppic's brother Edwin for his role in the raid on Harper's Ferry, it doesn't appear they ever got their hands on Barclay. A New York Times article from the period, indicates Letcher was none too happy with Governor Kirkwood for his refusal to extradite Coppic. Bookseller Inventory # 100674
