1904. First edition thus. The edition consists of 750 copies printed on antique laid paper, and 100 copies printed on Arnold's unbleached hand-made paper, each numbered and signed[initialled[ by Hans Hecht. This is copy number 41. xvi, 348pp. and a vignette on the title page. Top edge gilt. David Herd (1732-1810) was a Scottish anthgologist, born in Marykirk, Kincardine. He worked for most of his life as anb accountant in Edinburgh, collecting songs and ballads in his spare time. He was the editor of 'Ancient Scottish Ballads', and acted as literary advisor to Archibald Constable. This collection of songs from his manuscripts has been edited with an introduction and notes by Hans Hecht. The book is bound in the original paper covered boards with a creamy-grey cloth spine and a paper title label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and soiling to the cloth on the spine. The corners are rubbed with a little damage to the paper covering the corner tips and the bottom of the spine is lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the endpapers and some light foxing on the first and last few pages, including a few faint marks on the title page. There are traces of a removed bookplate or label on the front fixed endpaper and a name has been written on the front free endpaper. Seller Inventory # ScotMusic126
