About this Item
Original poster. Color lithograph. Measures 26.25 x 19.5". This historic World War I propaganda poster depicts Uncle Sam arm-in-arm with Britannia, symbolizing the strong alliance between the United States and Britain. The scene includes the American eagle and the British lion, representing national pride and unity. Britannia, a personification of Britain dating back to Roman times, is shown with a shield bearing the Union Jack, while Uncle Sam holds a sword. The poster, which promotes a rally on December 7, 1918, subtly contrasts the ancient, dignified Britannia with the more contemporary and folksy Uncle Sam, emphasizing their warm, triumphant relationship. Despite the differences in their symbolism, the poster humanizes Britannia, adding a touch of "sex appeal" to underscore the friendly and victorious partnership between the two nations. Poster in good condition. Mounted on linen. Uncle Sam is a national personification of the United States, symbolizing the U.S. government or the country as a whole. Uncle Sam became particularly popular during the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in political cartoons and propaganda posters. The origins of Uncle Sam as a symbol are often traced back to the War of 1812, with some attributing the name to Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied barrels of beef to the U.S. Army, stamped with "U.S." for United States, which soldiers reportedly began referring to as "Uncle Sam." Over time, Uncle Sam evolved into a widely recognized embodiment of American values, patriotism, and national identity. James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) was an American artist and illustrator, best known for his iconic World War I propaganda poster featuring Uncle Sam, which became one of the most enduring images of the 20th century. Born in Pelham Manor, New York, Flagg studied at several art schools, including the Art Students League in New York City. He worked across various media, including fine art, cartooning, and pen-and-ink drawings, and was widely recognized for his contributions to periodicals and poster designs. Flagg famously used his own likeness for the image of Uncle Sam in the "I Want YOU for U.S. Army" poster, which was inspired by a similar British recruitment poster. Throughout his career, he also created portraits of notable figures like Theodore Roosevelt, capturing the spirit of his time through intelligent and witty works. Seller Inventory # 323014
