About this Item

ca.1900. Original photograph, gelatine silverprint, 14,8 x 21,5 cm. On December 3rd, 1914, wreck, the German cargo ship KONIG, built in 1896 by Reiherstieg Schiffswerfte & Maschinenfabrik Ag and owned at the time of her loss by Deutsche Ost, was scuttled but later sold to a local. - Remaining in Dar-es-Salaam's large natural harbour were the German cargo ships SS Konig and SS Feldmarschall, the hospital ship SS Tabora and several smaller coastal vessels - all of which could conceivably be used to resupply the trapped cruiser should they leave port. (The coast of East Africa stretches some 4,000 miles from Cape Guardafui in Somalia to the Mozambique Channel. It is rugged and inhospitable, with few safe anchorages, miles of treacherous coral reefs and a strong northerly current. Over the years it has become a ship s graveyard, to the unlucky ones, and a dire warning to those that ran aground and were subsequently refloated. The earliest known recorded casualty is the Portuguese galleon San Raphael that grounded and was burnt at Mtongoni, near Tanga in 1499.). KEYWORDS:germany/photo. Bookseller Inventory # 55252
