About this Item
8vo. Pp. 256. Bound in black cloth stamped with silver lettering on spine and a dragon vignette on the front board. A bright, fresh copy in the dust jacket that shows only light wear to bottom edges. (Glare at lower half of front panel in the first and third photos is a result of Brodart reflection, not a condition of the dust jacket.). The play on which the 1941 Josef von Sternberg film noir was based. That movie, starring Gene Tierney, Victor Mature, and Walter Huston, received Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Musical Score. Many changes were made in the film adaptation, mostly to water down the exoticism, including changing the brothel to a gambling casino and redirecting the heroine's addiction from drugs to gambling. Early editions are scarce, especially so in the dust jacket. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve. Seller Inventory # 8468
