About this Item
2 vols. Contemporary calf, red and black morocco lettering-labels, marbled endpapers. Spines slightly rubbed, lettering-label on vol. ii slightly chipped. Second edition "with considerable additions" (the first edition was entitled Six Sermons, 1800); on the title-page the ownership signature of M. Mitchell, with the later inscription below, "To the Revd Mr Forbes of Strathdon - 1808". The year 1801 was a turning point for Sydney Smith; living in Edinburgh, he suggested over dinner with Francis Jeffrey that they start a literary review - and thus The Edinburgh Review was born. The owner and donor of this set of the sermons is probably Mary Mitchell (née Forbes, 1776-1829; married 1803 Captain Daniel Mitchell of the East India Company), for whom the grand Mitchell-Forbes Mausoleum at Strathdon would be erected, perhaps to the design of Archibald Simpson; and the recipient her younger brother George Forbes (1778-1834), who succeeded their father there as Minister.
